Rear Admiral Peter Brady, CD, CVO, MMM, J.P.
Rear Admiral Peter Brady has wide experience in senior and executive management in the military (Defence Force/Coast Guard) and marine administration, nationally, regionally, and internationally. He is currently the Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica and has served as Chief of Defence Staff in the Jamaica Defence Force (1990 to 1998), Commandant – JDF Coast Guard (1978-1988) and Commanding Officer – HMJ Ships (1970-1978). Rear Admiral Brady continues to provide consultancy to the Government of Jamaica on marine policy issues including: marine transportation relating to maritime safety, security, environmental protection, standards of training and competency for seafarers.
In 2006, Rear Admiral Brady was appointed Chairman of the National Hydrographic Committee, and Honorary Consul of the Principality of Monaco. He is an Associate Fellow of The Nautical Institute and between 1988 and 1989 he was seconded from the Jamaica Defence Force to the Port Authority of Jamaica as a marine consultant to establish a marine secretariat.
Over the years, Rear Admiral Bailey has had several International Maritime Organisation (IMO) appointments. These include: Chairman – Committee 1 – IMO General Assembly (Dec 2003), Vice Chairman – IMO Standards of Training and Watchkeeping (STW) Sub-Committee (also officiated as Chairman) (2003 – 2004), Chairman – Committee of the Whole, Conference of the Parties to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers; the 2010 Amendments (the Manila Amendments) (Jun 2010) and Chairman – IMO Standards of Training and Watchkeeping (STW) Sub Committee (2005 – 2012). Other international appointments include: Visiting Lecturer -World Maritime University, Sweden (2003 – 2004), Board of Governors – World Maritime University (2007 – 2015) and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors of the World Maritime University (2015).
Rear Admiral Brady has a Post-Graduate Degree in Marine Management from Dalhousie University, Canada and has also completed numerous training programmes. These include: Oceans Development Programme (Entry into Force, UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, its Implementation and Agenda 21) – The International Oceans Institute, Dalhousie University, Royal Naval Staff College – London, Naval Officers Training and Infantry Officers Training – Canada. He is a Justice of the Peace and also served as a member of the Board of Management – Caribbean Maritime Training Institute, Secretary of the Environment Foundation of Jamaica and Member/Vice Chairman of the National Council on Ocean and Coastal Zone Management. In February 2017 he was appointed as Special Envoy to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for Jamaica’s bid to be elected to the IMO Council for the period 2018-2018.
Throughout his career, Rear Admiral Brady has received the following awards: Legion of Merit (Commander, USA), Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, Commander of Distinction (Jamaica), Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service (Jamaica Military) and the IMO-Themed Seatrade Award for Maritime Education and Training.
