They might have turned out for a football match, but on Wednesday, attendees at the Victoria Mutual Foundation/ St James Football Association Under-13 Football Competition in Montego Bay, St James, got so much more.
Held at the seaside Urban Development Corporation Playing Field, the launch, attended by many of the young players, their coaches and family members, was an exciting ‘kick off’ to the highly anticipated event which Victoria Mutual has sponsored for 28 years.
The theme of the competition is ‘Saving Goals’ and Audley Knight, assistant vice-president of service and sales support at Victoria Mutual, reminded the players that “goals help to win matches, but ‘saving goals’ are also important”.
Knight noted also that Victoria Mutual was “proud to contribute to the development of young people” via a competition that “fosters a spirit of community in St James”.
The event’s guest speaker, former national football player Milton Griffiths, was in full motivation mode and captured the attention and imagination of the youngsters. He emphasised the importance of self-belief.
“Without confidence you are already defeated. Look at me. Growing up, there were people who told me that I wouldn’t amount to anything. But I believed in myself. That makes all the difference,” he said.
Griffiths, who played professional football in Germany for many years, thanked Victoria Mutual for supporting the competition and urged the players to make the most of it. “I came from nothing. Growing up, I didn’t even have a door. But football took me all over the world. I have stayed in five-star hotels and I wore three-piece suits to practice. That is what football can do for you if you work hard and believe in yourself,” he said.
